Hi all,

I cannot get recent ATI drivers to work for my XFX HD Radeon 4850 card. After going through proper protocol for un/reinstalling drivers, I get a weird BSOD error within a couple minutes after startup. I ran into this issue a few months ago and just reverted back to the old drivers, but I've since upgraded my motherboard and want to get the most up-to-date drivers working.

Specs:

ASUS M4A88T-M rev 2.01
AMD Phenom II X4 960T 3.0 GHz
XFX Radeon HD 4850
XFX 650W Modular PSU
16 GB RAM (Corsair Vengeance DDR1600 PC12800 4 x 4GB)
Hitachi 500 GB 7200 RPM HDD
Windows Home Premium 64-Bit SP1

If I use AMD Catalyst Install Manager in Control Panel to uninstall just the Vision Control Center, leaving the drivers and other utilities intact, I'm able to run the system without issue. However, there's little to no fan control as a result; I can run my CPU at about 32C idle, and the GPU sits at about 52-54 idle, but it jumps up to about 85C under load and the fan runs incredibly high.

To alleviate the fan issue, I tried upgrading to 12.2, but I'm encountering the same error when trying to get Catalyst/Vision Control Center running. The screen goes blank, I turn the monitor off and back on, and the computer reboots. Here's the full BSOD error:

AMD Support was useless. They told me to upgrade from 12.1 to 12.2, reseat my RAM, and install some security updates. I've gone through and done a complete reinstall of the drivers -- including using Driver Sweeper, CCleaner, and deleting the ATI folders from Program Files. I also did a clean reinstall of all the .NET framework packages. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Well, in the instance that someone finds this on Google, I finally ended up flashing my VBIOS on my video card, reinstalled .NET frameworks using the method listed on Microsoft's support site, and went into "Turn Windows components on or off" to make sure .NET 3.5 was checked. Flashing the card's VBIOS solved the crashing problem when CCC was installed, and reinstalling .NET frameworks allowed CCC to run again. Hope this helps someone out -- it took me a couple of months to get to the bottom of it.

in my case, I have a Radeon HD 6700, after re-installing catalyst driver, I get bsod on start up every time. it freeze at a blue screen after windows logo. I spent last 7 stressful days to find solution, I have updated my bois, tested my ram sticks with memteat86, tried many different versions of catalyst, formatted hard drive and re install windows 7 at least 10 plus times.
here's the solution that worked for me:
1st you need to use memtest86 to make sure it's not memory hardware related. you can search youtube to see how to use memtest86, very easy.
then download a free software called "driver sweeper" (very important) un-install you amd drivers from your pc first, use driver sweeper, reboot, then go to amd site to download the latest driver.
just follow this guide
http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=187683
success!
I think the key is that even after un-install catalyst, or update from older version, there many hidden files left in your c: drive to cause conflicts with the newer version of amd driver. that's why driver sweeper comes in handy to clean it up.
hope someone find this solution useful :D
