cause of configuration problem in windows

For the last 4 weeks or so my laptop updates almost every evening, then cannot configure the updates. My daughter bought a new laptop a week ago and it's experiencing exactly the same problem- what causes this problem on a 3 year old laptop and a brand new laptop?

If you have the same version of Windows, they run the same updates.

Do the updates manually, select them a few at a time and see if they run all the way through.

Thanks for your answer Hang-the Nine. I run Windows 7, whereas my daughter runs Windows 10. I think your second recomendation might do the job, as it starts configuring- gets to about 15% then stops. The only problem I have now is, how do I download them manually?

If you look at the Windows update screens it will show you the updates with check boxes next to them, un-check all, then check off a handful at a time.
