Causes Of Screen Tearing

I have been playing CS GO and Rainbow Six Siege and have been noticing screen tearing. When I enable V-Sync it can cause mouse lag so I looked at other options to fix it. I saw some videos about CS that told me to limit the FPS in the console. I Have a 60Hz monitor so I limited it to 120 fps and the screen tearing was greatly reduced. I can't get 120 fps in Rainbow Six so I limited it to 60 fps and the screen tearing was reduced but still distracting. I thought the cause of screen tearing is desync between the fps and the refresh rate on the monitor. I would think that limiting the fps to 60 would fix it as long as the fps stayed at that target. I used RivaTuner to limit the fps in Rainbow Six. Could this method of limiting the fps be unreliable? Does the quality of the monitor determine tearing?Do G-Sync Monitors cure this problem without mouse lag?
 
Screen tearing is a lack of syncing the refresh rate and the displaying of each frame. Having the same FPS as your refresh rate is not the same thing as syncing them, as the timing of when the GPU sends the new image has to also be synced up with the monitors refreshes. Without V-sync, G-sync or Fresync, it will not sync and tear.

You may also want to try another tactic on your FPS limiting. If you limit your FPS to exactly your refresh rate, your tear will be move very slowly (you can never exactly match the refresh rate). It will make it much more apparent than if it was not stationary. Try limiting it to 70, 110 or some other number that is quite a few FPS away from your refresh rate.

You may also find that with CS GO, that you'll prefer to not limit the refresh rate at all, as the game mechanics are more to your favor at higher FPS.

A high refresh rate monitor helps reduce how apparent tearing. You could get a new monitor.
 


Thank you for the insight. I will try limiting the fps to 70 or I will just use v-sync. Later on I will definitely look into getting a G-Sync monitor.
