I have a relatively old VII Hero Maximus motherboard ATX from 5-7 years ago.

Surprisingly, it has M.2 support. Looks like it shares bandwidth with a PCI express slot. Looks like the M.2 connection is to the Intel Z97 express chipset and not the ASMedia SATA controller too.

Other than that, are there any caveats? The BIOS manual doesn't say anything about not being able to boot off of an M.2 type 2280, but I know that is an issue for some older motherboards.

Oh, and I'm looking at getting one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/Intel-660p-2...words=2tb+ssd&qid=1558712087&s=gateway&sr=8-8

I like how with the M.2, I don't have to run a separate SATA power cable to it. I already have two SSDs and two mechanical hard drives in the system.

Drive you listed is a PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 storage device, while the 2014 model Maximus VII Hero M.2 is PCIe 2.0 x2 which limits drive maximum data transfer speed up to 10Gb/sec. A PCIe 3.0 x4 connection found on the M.2 drive and new model motherboards have up to 32Gb/sec data transfer speeds.

By using a PCIe x4 adapter card, you can double the transfer rate by using a x4 PCIe slot instead of the M.2 PCIe x2 speed. That would give you up to 20Gb/sec data transfer speed.

Good thinking @Calvin7. 10 gigabit / sec is 1250 Mb / sec, and most likely the drive will probably never run at that speed. But the limit is there for sure!
