I have a relatively old VII Hero Maximus motherboard ATX from 5-7 years ago.
Surprisingly, it has M.2 support. Looks like it shares bandwidth with a PCI express slot. Looks like the M.2 connection is to the Intel Z97 express chipset and not the ASMedia SATA controller too.
Other than that, are there any caveats? The BIOS manual doesn't say anything about not being able to boot off of an M.2 type 2280, but I know that is an issue for some older motherboards.

I like how with the M.2, I don't have to run a separate SATA power cable to it. I already have two SSDs and two mechanical hard drives in the system.
