CD/DVD not working

Hello, I have a dell inspiron 531s with windows 7 and i would put a CD in the computer, but it wouldn't detect it. When i put a CD in i hear it spinning or something, but the screen says nothing about the CD i put in. Help please?

Any error reported in device manager ?
Try updating driver, scan for new hardware in device manager ?

On the side of your computer there should be a service tag; if not then just use the model number at the following link:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/NeedProductSelection

This will take you to all the drivers for your machine. You will see a set of drivers for CD/DVD drives and you can download the appropriate driver there. Install it, restart and at worse, you're no better off than you were before.

Welcome to the forums.

Try a commercially produced disk. If your computer cannot read the disk, more than likely, the drive is bad.

I have never had to use a driver for a CD/DVD/BD drive ever.

Ok, well DOS. driver from OAK i think.

That said, yeah jsc has a good point.

The screen says nothing about the disk you put in but, is the auto play feature disabled and the disk is really there and accessible in windows explorer?
