cd-rom bios problems

I recently built my new computer... I threw in a 56x elements cd-rom drive (www.elements-pc.com). In Award Bios, I set to auto detect, ultradma mode 2 and some other setting at 4. Cd-rom is on secondary master and jumpers are correct. The Bios does not detect a cd-rom drive. It leaves the space next to Secondary master blank. When I go to set the boot sequence, I can designate cd-rom, but there is no specification for my drive. In Windows ME, drive D: (cd) comes up <unknown>. My cd-rom works, but is not identified. how do I fix? Is this just a driver problem?
