CD ROM DRIVE WON'T READ DISCS

Hello All
I am new member and I need help.

Compaq laptop EvoN1000v
Win XP Prof
Bought in 2003
512Mb RAM
30GB HDD
My PC stopped reading discs a few months ago. Since then I have tried everything to get this recified.
I bought a USB new dvd drive, it did not work.

I followed instructions to find in the registry the file and remove the upper & lower filters.

I did this but there are no filters showing.
If anyone has any ideas of how I can fix this, I will be eternally grateful.
