Hey guys so i just recently build a pc with msi z97 gaming 5 paired with 4690k and gtx 970. But the problem is sometimes my CD rom just won't show it-self on 'my computer'. And that time if i insert a cd there that wont work too. My CD rom is very old but this wasn't happening before with gigabyte h55m-s2v; its only happening with this build. So is it a faulty motherboard or a faulty CD rom? How can i identify it?

Solution
Try changing the cable and change the SATA slot on the motherboard. Also, connect your SATA devices to the sata plugs that are usually dark in colour (the colour that has the most number of connectors), the 2 or 4 connectors that are different in colour is connected to a different chipset that requires additional drivers in Windows.

It is your CD player's problem try cleaning it with blower or vacuum cleaner, there will be dust locked over the reading lens
