CDRW in an HP Vectra..no go ??

I have just installd a BENQ 5232X CDRW in my HP Vectra (450 mhz)- and
found it has an annoying problem. When the machine boots it goes as far
as detecting the HD....then sits for 60-90 secs before it detects the
CDROM (set as CDROM)...then sits another 60-90 secs before it will boot
from the HD. I am running Linux but I don't think that has anything to
do with the problem. If I set the drive as AUTO in the BIOS it does the
same thin, but Linux then can't setup the network as I suspect the BIOS
grabs Int 10 (the NIC Int). BenQ support is not making any helpfull
suggestions and H-P support is just about non-existent.
I was running the latest BIOS version, but flashed it again, just in
case.
Anybody got any good ideas?

Check the jumpers on the CD-RW drive. For most HP systems, the usual jumper
setting is cable select (CS)... Ben Myers

Well I **think** I have tried all possible combinations ( can't read
the jumper diagram---it's impossibly small) but I'll go through them
again.

The jumper settings and their positions on CD and DVD drives are now
standardized. Looking at the drive from the rear, the jumper positions from
left to right should be marked CS (Cable Select), SL (Slave), MA (Master). If
they are not clearly marked, assume that they are this way.

The other consideration here is whether or not another drive is attached to the
same IDE ribbon cable.

If the CD-RW is the only drive attached to the ribbon cable, the only possible
jumper settings are CS or MA. HP has used both settings in its Vectras just to
confuse us all, depending on the type of cable in the system. There are two
different types of IDE ribbon cables, as the industry could not agree on ONE
standard for IDE cabling.

If the CD-RW shares the IDE ribbon cable, then either one drive is set to Master
and the other Slave, or they are both set to Cable Select. Again, depends on
the cable.

If you get the jumpers and the cabling absolutely correct, and the system is
still slow as a slug booting up, I would wonder if the Benq drive was fully
functional. When the system is finally booted up, does the drive work?

Since my last reply...I have (sort of) solved the problem. The drive
operates fine IF it's on the same IDE connector as the HD as a slave. I
tried that combo in desparation. I am beginning to suspect the second
IDE connector is defective someway...but a Teac 32X cdrom operated fine
there.

Over the past few days I have tried both types of cables....all
possible combinations of jumpers but the ONLY way it works is as it is
now setup. I find that weird...I am not even sure at the moment ( the
machine is now buttoned up again) whether the jumper is in the slave
position! But it works and that's the important thing.

If it's not broken now, don't try to fix it further.

What was the jumper setting on the Teac 32x CD-ROM? Probably jumpered as MA
(Master), if it was consistent with the Vectras I've worked on... Ben Myers
