CF r9 290x on XFX 850W XXX

XFX makes an awesome power supply and 850w is more than enough power. If you overclock your processor or graphics cards heavily, then you might need more power at that point, but you should be just fine with what you have.

Cheers!

Ok, would you reccomend twin gtx 970's instead? They'd be £200 more for two of them but I wouldn't need a new psu.

Only thing is, the r9 290x's are still better at 4k.

The 290X would probably edge out the 970s at that resolution. Not worth the extra money really.
But just make sure the ebay seller accepts returns incase they are trying to sell off broken ones

Tom's Hardware was able to make the 290X pull 335 watts. That puts 2 cards at 670 watts by themselves. You want around 200 watts headroom over the max your entire system can pull so 1000 watts minimum.

Yeah anything below 4k and the Sli 970s win easily. At very high resolution the 290X Crossfire wins though.

Ok thanks. I'll wait until I have the money, but atm I'm leaning towards 2xgtx 970's with a gsync acer monitor.

Maybe driver updates can improve the gtx 970's 4k performance but then again maybe not!

If you don't have a 4k monitor yet wait a few months and see how the real high end Maxwell cards do. The 970 and 980 are aimed at GTX 6xx series owners and lower. The big Maxwell cards will be on the 20nm manufacturing process and will be aimed at owners of the GTX 770/780/780 Ti and Titan. Should be out early next year. That's what I'm waiting for.
