You could be experiencing any of a large variety of hardware or software
problems ranging from a overheating processor or memory problems to
outdated drivers or corruption in some software component the simulator
is dependent upon.
Among the efforts you should undertake are;
Run Microsoft's DirectX Diagnostic, including all the video and sound
tests. After running the tests have the diagnostic produce a log file by
clicking the button on the diagnostic's first tab. The diagnostic is on
the Tools menu of the System Information utility in last several
versions of Windows and should respond to DXDIAG in the "Run" dialog.
Use one of several common software packages, downloads or web sites to
verify your system is free of virus, trojan horses and worms. Use other
packages or downloads to make sure your system is free of Spyware or Adware.
Run software to determine if your CPU and GPU (graphics accelerator
unit) chips are operating at a reasonable tempreture. Many system,
motherboard and video card manufacturers include software for this task
with the hardware. Repeat the test after you have run the simulator for
a while to see if either of the tempretures climb considerably.
If you aren't able to determine the root of your problem with these
tests, post specifics of your system hardware so that others with
similar hardware can compare your settings and driver versions to
theirs. Include with your post the results of the above tests and the
complete contents of the error your computer is displaying after the
restart. Many of the hardware specifics and test results will be
detailed in the diagnostic's log file which you can copy in whole or in
part to your post with Windows' copy & paste capabilities.
