Yes, tho if the gigabyte is clocked at 1000mhz core clock and the sapphire at 950mhz, then both of them will run at 950mhz. Just overclock one of them so you have both running at the same speed!
That link has nothing to do with anything. You can't crossfire an XFX DD BE 7970 with an MSI Lightning 7970... Tried it, spent a month trying to get it working, couldn't get it working with consistency...
When you get two cards that have very different BIOS-es, you *can* get problems.

"HD 7970 (All variants)" crossfires with 7970 and 7950.
I don't know why you had problems with yours, just saying per AMD's documentation, it shouldn't matter. Crossfire is pretty forgiving what you can combine.
