What motherboard do you have? If you have a z170 it may be worth it to upgrade to a skylake k cpu and overlock, or even kabylake if your mobo supports it.

Nope. Your cpu is not too old. Whatever you change to, you wont get any remarkable performance boost, with the price you are going to pay and specially at those resolution and refresh rate. Its better that you stick to it for now and think of upgrade after a year or so.

Are you not reaching 144FPS in a lot of the games that you are playing? Also what games are you playing? Upgrading from the i5 to the i7 will only make a difference in some games, not all. And if you are already getting good performance, such as 144fps in all of your games, no need to upgrade.

If your games run fine then I don't see a reason to upgrade. Only you can make that call. The only reason I would recommend an upgrade is if you are unhappy with the performance of the system or if your system does not meet the requirements for a particular application.

I would suspect you're not far from the 1070's max but still measurably behind a 7700k, that being said the next xx70 will need a faster CPU for sure (imagine a 1080ti on your cpu vs a 7700k) you're probably ok for now especially if you know how to optimize your settings for looks and performance.
