Changed network plan with At&t, speeds only correct 10 feet away from the router

We recently dropped the cable package with At&t and upgrade the networking speed from 6Mbps to 18Mbps. After various speed tests and the one that they recommend the speeds that we were getting were about 2Mbps. They said the internet was upgraded so the speeds should be better. Our router is in the basement and when we ran the speed tests down there the speed was correct, but only about 10 feet away from the router. Do I need to contact At&t to tell them this or is there a fix that I can do locally? Thanks.

Yes its a leased At&t router. Since it was working fine before did they mess up some settings after the upgrade?

It's a 2.4GHz wireless router that worked perfectly fine before the upgrade.
