Changes in boot drive reverted to on next start up

Today I see a strange thing on my friends desktop.. he is using intel motherborad, 2 gb ram, 1tb hdd with windows xp.. strange thing is that when I uninstall any program from his compter or make changes in his C drive like copying a data etc... on the next startup I see the program that I uninstall is unaffected and the data that I copy in his C drive is lost.... plz help me.. how this is possible ???.. any type of help is appreciated...
