I want to change my friends motherboard in his computer, what is the name of the windows file to delete that holds all of the information about the current hardware? Or do I even need to do anything when I switch them?

Most of the time, just switch the motherboard and it'll ask you to install the stuff next time you boot into Windows.

There isn't a single file, just a bunch of .inf files in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and C:\WINDOWS\INF.

If you are switching the mobo for another with the same chipset then just swap the hardware, hopefully Windows won't choke on it (back-up all data first though).

Switching to a board with a very different architecture (eg LX to i810) can cause all sorts of problems, in fact it may never work properly at all until you re-install Windows from scratch.
