Changing computer owner name

When you install Windows XP, you are asked during the installation process to put in your full name. Later on, the installation process will ask you for the user names for the various accounts. Of course, you can have names that are different in both instances. For example, let's say I put in the name John Smith (me) as the owner of this copy of XP, but when it is time to create the first user account, I put in Mary (because she is the only user on this computer). Later on, I can easily change Mary name to something else as needed. However, I have not found a way to change the John Smith name. This name is shown when you right click on My Computer and under the General tab, you see the phrase: "Registered to". How can I change this name to something else? This would come in handy when I sell my PC and does not want the buyer to see my name on his "new" PC.

its in the registry somewhere. if you dont know how to find it you have no business mucking around in your registry anyway.

You had to learn at one time, did you not? Or did you know everything about computers right from the get go? I thought this forum was for people that didnt know everything to ask questions of those who do(like yourself) and get some teachings.
Yes, the registry is a very tricky thing but we all have to learn sometime. OH WAIT, not you, you already knew.

making registry changes is dangerous. i dont have any interest explaining to some one which keys to change if they dont even know what a registry is to begin with.

Simply search the registry for the name. The key will display registered owner and company.

Why did you assume that I am clueless as to what the registry is? I never mentioned in the question that I don't know about the registry including the danger of mucking it up.

The whole point of a forum is to ask other people who may have done something that one has not done before. I have tinkered quite a bit in the registry. It's just that I have never done this mod before to change the owner's name. So I was just asking if anyone here ever done it and give me a little tip. Shesh!

Go to Start,Run, Regedit.search for HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENT VERSION. In the right pane, double click REGISTERED OWNER, and put whatever you wish in the "value data" field, click ok.In the right panel, double click REGISTERED ORGANIZATION, and in the "Value Data" field, put in whatever you want. Click ok. Exit regedit, and reboot. Owner changed.
