I am switching from an intel cpu to amd and I have a question. Would it be possible to swap the cpu and mobo, and then boot up the system again and within windows, re install but keep files without having errors? Or is the best way to just clean install the OS? Thanks

Solution
Full wipe and reinstall, of everything.

Yes you can swap cpu and mobo out for another one.
Have done it myself a few times, most recently from:

Asus 1150 M/B with I3 4130t to Asus AM4 M/B with Ryzen 5 1500X.

*was using a geforce gt 730 when i did the change over (now gtx 970).

Had no problems at all, and have more systems of mine to update the same way.

(Used to do this with windows 7 too).

The only issue you can get is windows activation, as the digital licence is tied to the motherboard.

And that is nowhere near a 100% guarantee that it will work.

3 possibilities:
  1. It boots up just fine
  2. It fails completely
  3. It boots up, but you're chasing issues for weeks/months.
I've seen all 3.

Try it if you want, but prepare beforehand, in the likely event it fails.
Best practices point to a full reinstall.
