Changing cpu

I'm kinda new to this so... I have a quite old system (3 years old) and it kinda sucks recently my sister upgrade her system and she left me her old cpu (amd athlon 64 x2 6000) And it's a bit better than my current cpu which is an amd athlon 64 x2 5050e. So can I just change the "new" cpu with the old one without any trouble, and if there is trouble can I just change back to the old cpu? The system is really outdated so there is no need to say it.. I know.

check your motherboards cpu compatibility list and see if its supported.

It's is.
My main concern is will I be able to change the cpu back if something goes wrong?

They are both socket am2 processors. You'll be able to change back.

LOL, it's not that outdated. Two generations removed from current tech. Old, is 10+ years. I'm still using an Athlon 2500+

Well what do I know? 😛
Though for gaming this cpu is getting pretty bad... and not to mention map compiling....
