Changing dedicated servers - Sales person said new server is better

I was hoping that someone could tell me if this is the case, the sales person said that if I upgrade to the newer server, I'd get better performance.

This is what I currently have:

Dual Xeon l5639 Hex Core - 2 processors @ 12 cores

This is what they are suggesting I move to:

Intel Xeon E5-2609 - 1 processor @ 4 cores

Seems I am losing a lot of cores by this move. Is the performance of the 2609 so good that it'd be better than 12 cores, especially with running a handful of virtual machines?

I'm running windows virtual machines on this and they run well on the 12 core machine. I'm leery of moving.

Anyone have any input?

Hmmm, for single threaded tasks the e5 2609 will run circles around the i5639 dual xeon. But for Vms, you better keep those 12 cores.
