Just an FYI for those who are really tired of Microsoft screwing up their installed programs. (re: today's Outlook outage caused by a bugged Office update)

I had a couple test Outlooks affected by this latest bug. I have since changed both Office update schemes to the semi-annual channel update.
This can't fully prevent Microsoft from screwing up your Office programs, but it should stop these critical bugs from affecting your system since the chances of them making it into a semi-annual update are should be low.

First step is to check what update channel you are currently in. Open any Microsoft Office app, go to File - (Office) Account and check out the About section. If you are not in the semi-annual channel, and want to be (and you have the ability to adjust your Office update channel) run each of the following commands at an administrative command prompt -

cd c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\clicktorun
officec2rclient.exe /changesetting channel=broad
officec2rclient.exe /update user

You should get an Office 'downloading updates' box pop up when you execute the last command. Let it complete. Wait a full 2 minutes after it disappears (it may pop back up on slower computers). Then open up an Office app (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and check what update channel you are in again. Hopefully it says "semi-annual enterprise channel".

Note that this won't work with all versions of Office and you need an active internet connection to make this change.
