Hi, I'm upgrading my motherboard + cpu and want to ask if there is any problems with just swapping out from one to the other. (I know there probably is but I'm not very experienced).

old:
amd fx 8350
not sure what motherboard is exactly but its a full size gigabyte one (if that helps)

new:
intel i5-4690k
z97-p

I have the retail version of windows install on my computer and have been reading up on if it will just work if i swap them out. but if any problems do arise I don't have the original disk i install it from.

Solution
I assume you want to just move the hdd across that has windows on it? Its hard to say, win 10 might just boot up on the new PC or the amount of changes may stop it booting due to errors. I would back up anything you don't want to lose off C before doing the change

Since its retail you shouldn't have any hassles with activation but you could do this first: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/20530/windows-10-reactivating-after-hardware-change

In case you need to fresh install, just download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB

Ok so you recommend that I just go ahead with the install worst comes to worst I still have options, also I have already done what you linked me too.

Honestly, you probably better clean installing right away, you changing both CPU and Motherboard to different teams, as such, and all the motherboard drivers you have now won't match the Intel ones. Fresh install would mean PC would not be trying to use features that no longer exist and it will support your new PC much better. Best idea on a new PC anyway.

Here is a guide to clean installing win 10: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html

well I just went ahead and did it and was very surprised that it booted up straight away to the login screen, I've uninstalled old drivers and everything works like it used to.
