Makes sense - names are a security risk. I do not use any personal identifiable information or family names in my network or device names.
Do you control the router? Did you do a factory reset as part of the name change?
You must make sure that all devices on the network are re-configured to the new network name and probably need to rebooted accordingly.
And it may take a bit of time for all of the devices to reestablish the communications amongst themselves with respect to the new network name.
Not sure that I understand the "channel" question: You had six channels and now only have one OR the channel in use changed from 6 to 1?
