I bought my pc 2-3 years ago and I want to now upgrade it.

I had already bought the graphics card (AGP) so isn't worth upgrading the motherboard as yet to pci-e

I was just wandering will my motherboard be compatible with a (AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (3GHz) Socket AM2 L2 2MB (2 x 1MB) Cache OEM Processor)

if not can anyone tell me what is the highest I can go to?

Thank you

pretty sure that you can't use AM2 cpu's. You will have to look at the socket of your mobo. download CPU-Z and see what socket you have. and find out what brand of mobo you have and go to there website to see waht cpu's it will support.

But since your pc is that old and still has AGP I thing you best choice if not your only choice is to do a full upgrade.

Sounds like you are running a AMD 939 Chipset on that motherboard, since you did not say which one you have. This CPU can be used in that 939 chipset. AMD Opteron 175 Denmark 2.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 110W Dual-Core Processor. NewEgg still has them in stock for $153.99.

Or you can use this one that clocks a bit higher AMD Opteron 180 Denmark 2.4GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 110W Dual-Core Processor and cost $159.99 also in stock at NewEgg.

That is unless you have around $1500 for complete upgrade of Motherboard, DDR2 Ram, CPU and Graphic Card.

Does this mean I can buy any dual core ??

Additionally, the elegant design of the AMD64 architecture allowed for the planning of dual-core processors from the ground up, which means that the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor is designed to fit in the same 939-pin infrastructure as single-core processors. All that is required is a BIOS update

Why don't u list your system specs so u can get an informed answer. If u go with an opteron ur PSU might be an issue if it doesn't have enough amps @ 12V as optys can draw up to ~2x the current as a single core athlon64 depending on what u have and what u upgrade 2.

Yes and No.

Yes if you can find these types of CPU for 939 chipset.
1) would look for 4000 series and up to 4600 X2.
2) FX 60
3) Opteron 170 thru 185 series.

See that you are either in the UK or Ireland, so I did some searching of sites that have what you want.

Best bet for your money would be the Opterons 175 thru 185 series. Or if you have the funds, then I would suggest a complete upgrade to the AMD AM series or AM2 series. But that would mean you would also have to get a new Motherboard, DDR2 Ram, Graphic Card and possible a 550 to 600watt PSU, besides the CPU.

So, you will have to do some thinking on how you wish to proceed.

Tha what everyone thought. So yes up to the X2 4800+ they have a 939 version but anything there after is set for AM2. Kinda killed AMDs easy upgrade plan for anyone who bought into the 939 platform.

I agree with you. It just shows as a AMD64 4000+ meaning it was a single core. Their dual cores have always been listed as X2 4000+ for consumers unless it was part of the short lived FX series.
