Changing refresh rate locks up/crashes PC

Hi there,

In the past few weeks, my PC has began 'crashing' every time I change my refresh rate.

What happens when I change the rate (60Hz -> 76Hz) is this:
The monitor goes to restart itself as usual, but turns back on to a completely blank screen. (Monitor: AOC G2460V)
Sound cuts off.
Everything on my second monitor freezes. Cursor doesn't move, nothing. It basically becomes a picture.
I've tried turning the monitor off and on, no result.

I have overclocked the panel from 75Hz to 76Hz. There's not much of a difference, I know, but it's been very stable ever since I overclocked it a few months ago. Even my 11 year old Dell E177FP works stable at 76Hz, just a bit warm to the touch.

I'm always expecting the PC to freeze when I change it because it happens maybe 25% of the time. (Even if I don't change it to 76Hz, but 75Hz instead; it has crashed on one occasion.)
I change my refresh rate often, usually when I play games like Astroneer, and when I record my screen, I will change to 60Hz for smoother recordings.

I hope to have this fixed, It's really inconvenient.

No big offense but you will gain nothing by Overclocking monitor's refresh rate in such low ratio.
I would definitly purchase a 120 - 144hz monitor or save for one.
Overclocking monitors may damage them since a faster current is required by the monitor, which means more energy is required, which means power must be greater. This creates more heat and wear on the components, both in the monitor and the external power supply.
So basically in my opinion you have fu*k*d up yours...
Stay in 60hz for now and save for a 120 or 144hz one. It is really the big difference and the Earth to heaven ( i know for experience) used to do the same and after killing my older monitor i purchased my first 144hz monitor and Oh My God, there is no point of comparisson between an overclocked 60 to 7X and a truly 144hz monitor.

Cheers!

Surely an Overclock of 1Hz won't do much to the panel? Both of my monitors have default options for 75Hz, not overclocked. ( I know 1Hz sounds stupid but I just want to push it as far as it will go before being unstable. 76Hz is mostly stable.)

I just wanted to know if this little OC to 76Hz was what caused my PC to freeze before needing to force restart. If it is the problem, I'll gladly go back to 75Hz.
I am saving for a 144Hz monitor.

I think what makes the PC to crash its more a config thing on the GPU drivers or some sort of thing that forces up that...
Still... I would go on 75hz since its a more standard messure than custom 76hz and the drivers are quite optimized for standard hz messures like 60hz,75hz,120hz,144hz,210hz etc.
If you are willing to just keep trying on the nvidia/ati config panel just for 1hz difference go ahead... But i wouldnt even bother and just go for 75...
