Changing Screen resolution

Does reducing monitor display resolution from recommended resolution to something lower helps in improving gaming performance? My screen resolution is 1366*768. If I reduce it to 720p will it improve performance even slightly?

But don't forget that reducing display resolution will adversely affect quality of graphics.

Make and model of your laptop? An SKU would help two fold. You might also want to state what game(s) title you're trying to tax the laptop with. If your laptop is in an ultrabook profile, you should look into casual gaming. If your laptop doesn't have a beefy dedicated GPU, you shouldn't be gaming on it.
