Hello,
My laptop has a nvidia gtx 770m and I am using an hdmi port to a monitor im using, since I dont enjoy having my laptop open. and Im looking to get more monitors, but that is besides the point, whenever the hdmi cable is out sound goes through my headset, but when it is I cant hear sound at all, my computer states there is a problem with playback device, and when I switch the devices nothing changes. When I test sounds using a youtube video or a test tone from windows it states failed to play audio. Please help thanks!

Solution
Sounds like your audio priority is HDMI before 3.5mm. with the HDMI plugged into your monitor go to 'control panel', and the 'hardwareand sound'. click 'sound', then select your HDMI output, which would be the one connected to your monitor. right click on the HDMI output that you selected and click 'properties'. after 'device usage' then click the dropdown box, and select 'Don't use this device'.

Hope that helped.
