Changing the internal volume disables the sound driver

I have this very annoying problem. I use a normal edifier speaker set for sound (USB + front plug) and it works fine, but whenever I change the internal volume either through volume control or the volume switch on my keyboard, all sound cuts out. Windows still shows sounds being played and my output device hasn't changed either, but the only way to get my sound back is to uninstall and reinstall the Realtek HD audio driver. What's causing this?

I'm running Windows 10

Kind regards,
Daan

So I managed to fix it.

It turned out Windows had set the sampling rate to the max, while my sound card could not handle that and crashed whenever the volume changed. When I lowered the sample rate it worked again.
