Changing the PSU, will it run?

Hey guys,

First or all, love the site, it really helped me a lot as I'm someone with very limited computer knowledge.

I'm currently switching some computer components. I'd like to upgrade my GPU by buying a 280x or a GTX 770. I'll run it with an Intel I5 3570 and 8 gigs of ddr3 ram.

I currently use a ZM-600HP power supply. I've read the forums and people say a 600W PSU should be able to do the job IF the PSU is of good quality. Now I've looked up the tier list but don't think my PSU is in it.

I'm too much of a wuss to start overclocking and am also such a wuss thinking my current PSU will blow up. ;) Also not going SLI.

Question; is my PSU of enough quality (tier?) to run such system with a 280x or 770 GTX? Do I have to stay away from for example the more powerfull 280x toxic version?

Cheers.

Your Zalman PSU is made by FSP and is not tiered here at Tom's as far as I can tell. It's not the best quality but not the worst either. It has a quad +12volt rail setup with enough power and PCIe cables for a 280X/770. As long as the ZM-600 is in good working order and not more than a couple years old it should be able to do the job. It scores well at JG-

I was about to link that review lol. It looks like a pretty good power supply to me, it should be good as long as it hasn't been in use for a very long time. That review was made in 2007 so that makes me think that power supply is quite old.

It's indeed a couple years old (mine is about 5 years old I reckon) but its been in a non used desktop computer for the past 4 years. I guess when you talk about age you mean years in use, in that case I'd say 1 year of usage. ;)

Should be fine. Give it a go.

Alright, thanks a lot for your time, both of you! You have really helped me out here.

Something easy for you guys, so hard for people like me. :)

Have a great day!

2007 would be at the tail-end of the bad caps era. It would be a good idea to check the PSU for any signs of bulging or leakage from the electrolytic capacitors. CapXon gained their notoriety for bad caps during that era and the Zalman ZM600-HP is littered wit CapXon caps.
