My grandfather wants me to build him a desktop, because his is 11 years old. I've built my own pc and helped others with theirs but I don't know what kind of parts to select for such a basic build. He will only need it for checking email, paying bills, etc. The only thing that I think could be used from his old computer is the case:

Can anyone help me out?

I had a couple of Dell 2400's. Don't bother trying to save $40 using that case. You will spend far more than that in simple brainpower trying to make it work.
They are sort of non-standard.

But for such a basic build, consider an inexpensive something from BestBuy or similar. At the low end, building your own is not always effort and price effective.
