I bought a 1440p display finding out that my old matx gigabyte g45m ds3h wouldnt push a higher than 1080p resolution over hdmi with its X4500HD graphics. I'm thinking I will buy a cheap gpu capable of running at higher resolutions up to at least 4k for future proving. The pc is for simple office work and some 2D CAD. It is not for gaming and until now I was running it with 2 displays - a stoneage 4:3 lcd(died after 15+ years) and a wide 20" lcd. I'm likely going to keep the 20" as a secondary.

Any suggestions for the gpu?

I wouldn't even spend that much. For what you need a GT 710 for 35 bucks

It will output up to 4k and do whatever you want. Has a DVI and an HDMI port so you can connect 2 displays.
