Cheaper Alternative to evga 285 gtx 1gb...?

evga 285 gtx 1gb pci-e is the card i need to buy to be able to support my monitor .. its a gateway fpd2485w tft lcd monitor 24 inch hd monitor ...

i had the evga 285 gtx 512mb and now when i turn the computer on all that shows up is bars of colors so guessing the card is shot


i cant really afford the 400$ to get the 1gb upgarde.....any one able to give me some pointers in a card that will handle the monitor??

First of all, you can use any monitor on any card, provided the connections are there.

Second, there is no such thing as a 285 with only 512mb of ram.

Your card might actualyl be broken though..

In order to suggest a new card, you will have to say what yuo will want to use it for. It is likely that you can get away with a MUCH less expensive card.

WoW and such not trying to play modern warefare 2 or anything

why am i not surprised thet dell affiliated tech support would say something like that? To say they are talking out of their ass is far to kind.

Anyway.. If you are playing things like WoW there is no need to go as high as a 285.

Something like a 1gb 4870, or a gtx260 would work well for wow and beyond, though the 4870 woudl cost less. If you feel you want a bit more punch then you could go for a 4890 or 275.

You could even go for something as low as a 4850 and still play wow fine.. but you might find that limits you at that resolution if you choose to play something newer.

I might add that you should take a good look at a 5770. Roughly the same performance as a 4870 for a bit more money, but uses less power and has DX11.

You won't be able to play on anything but lower settings if you wish to use teh native resolution of the dispaly on anything lower than a 9600/4670. That will also greatly limit your ability to play other new games. But, if you are sure wow is all you want to play a 9600 level card woudl be fine. I would not go lower than a 9600 mind you.
