I have an old Dell rig that i am using in my living room mostly for watching streaming movies and a couple of low demand games. (battleblock theater, speed runners etc.)

I need to hook it up do a 5.1 reciever via HDMI that will output the video and audio along the same cable.

currently, I have a Geforce 8400 GS which requires me to use an adapter to convert the headphone jack audio into the HDMI cable. this limits me to stereo AND has a terrible signal to noise ratio. drives me batty

so my requirements are.

1 cheap
2 audio out through hdmi
3 have at least or better "horsepower" than an 8400 GS for the couple of games i play

What are the suggestions?

You will need a multi channel source to get multi channel audio so do not expect CD's to have surround sound without extra software or your amp doing upmixing.

Old cards used to have to have a 2 pin SPDIF cable from your sound card, but everything has HDMI audio now.

Nvidia started to include onboard audio with the 4xx cards as far as I know.
AMD may have started all the way back with the 2xxx. The 4870(a card old enough to be on legacy support) came with a DVI -> HDMI adapter that would pass sound and even my GTX 650ti will do the same(pass audio from DVI -> HDMI adapters).
