Cheapest GPU to get ultra settings on 1680x1050? e.g. Witcher 3

I don't intend to replace my 22" 1680x1050 monitor until it dies, it's served me well and has excellent color reproduction.

I'm currently using a R7 260X card, which can give me decent framerates at med settings in most games. I'm considering upgrading to a card which can give me ultra settings @60fps if it is not too expensive. This should tide me over till my current monitor dies or 4K gaming becomes affordable.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You will need at least GTX 970 for Witcher3 on ultra settings
(nvidia hairworks will still have to be turned off - too much of a performance hit).

Gtx 970 seems like the only resonable option for your monitor.

GTX 960 4gb / R9 380 4gb should be enough for 900p @ Ultra.

I doubt that 960 can max out aaa games even at 900p though.
For solid 60fps you'll defo need at least 970

I had a gtx 970 and I could not run the witcher 3 on ultra and have locked 60 fps (at 1080p). However I turned down a few settings such as water, shadows, number of background characters (still had hairworks on) and the graphics are almost identical to ultra. In short, I think a 970 would be fine for the witcher 3 (at 900p) if you don't mind lowering one or two settings. If you are hell bent on maxing the game out you could wait for pascal/polaris or just grab a gtx 980
