Hello! im looking to upgrade this pre-built (Acer Aspire x3990) to be able to play dota 2 with max settings and 60fps @1600x900. I will be buying a new case and power supply to go along with the new gpu.

Based on the logical increments website which recommends at least a R7 250x, I've narrowed it down to a few choices - GT 740, R7 260. Where i live the 250x is at least 20-30 dollars more than the GT740, so i guess my question is if the step up is worth it? Or is there any other gpu that i should consider? thanks

I believe that is a slim line design, correct? If so, you are limited to low profile (half-height) cards. And upgrading the PSU in a slimline can get tricky. Also, it is hard to find a PSU over 300W for that size case. If you can, post a pic of the inside of the PC with the cover removed. I think you may even be limited to a single width card.

Yes it is a slim line. But i will be buying a new matx/itx case to place the motherboard in so there will be no space constraints
these are what im looking at: (prices in sgd)

Powercolor R7-260X 1GB ~160
PALIT GT740 1GB ~ 125

is the step up to the 260x for 35 worth it?

The GT 740 requires a 300W PSU minimum. If you go with the more powerful R7-260X, a 450W. You better add the cost of a new PSU to your budget. Besides, the slimline PSU won't fit anyway.
Yes, the R7-260X is worth the extra money. It may allow satisfactory gaming at 1080p, whereas the GT 740 is going to struggle at that resolution.
