Cheapest Home Server - Rackmounted

I have a server rack and want a multi-purpose home server to run Linux.

Not really any specific requirements, just want it to be budget friendly and upgradeable (if necessary).

Starting out just running a single linux OS, upgradeable to handle 3 or more virtual machines (Windows/Linux).

[strike]DDR3 or DDR4 memory, not necessarily ECC.[/strike]

Or if buying a used HP or Dell would be cheaper that would work also. I'd rather it be a bit newer though.

Something along the lines of an HP Proliant G[strike]8 (Sandy Bridge or newer-level performance).[/strike]

Looking for ideas.

*Update*: Looking for the cheapest rackmounted server setup to run a linux system for a lighting node on the Bitcoin network.

I was actually just thinking about the R610's, cheap, plentiful, and they still work wonders as basic VHosts. Keep in mind, you will not be able to...

Whats your budget? Also buying a used rackmount should be the way to go, they're plentiful and cheap with tons of parts.

Okay I'm swinging this thread in to asking for the cheapest used rackmount server worth buying or building to run a linux machine 24/7, the first thing I want to do is setup a lightning node on the Bitcoin network.

Is there anything cheaper than something like this? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-R610-Server-2x-E5620-2-40GHz-8-Core-8GB-RAM-SAS6i-iDRAC/182975561458?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D50686%26meid%3D18e17d5694134e8fbf22ea394028704e%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D8%26sd%3D222217753343%26itm%3D182975561458&_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042

I was actually just thinking about the R610's, cheap, plentiful, and they still work wonders as basic VHosts. Keep in mind, you will not be able to have more that 12 cores / 24 threads, but they've got tons of options otherwise.
