Cheapest upgrade from a 1050ti? Or not needed?

Hi all,

Building a PC and my last question is on the GPU. I plan to game but lower-intensity games (Overwatch, League of Legends, Rocket League). Will a 1050ti do the trick here for me?

If not, are the 580 and the 1060 6gb generally similar (the 1060 seems pricier at the moment)?

Note I have 8GB RAM and a 1080 60Hz monitor. So definitely not worried about playing the latest games in 4k. I have a suspicion that even though the 1060 is a big step up from the 1050ti, I simply may not need it since the 1050ti may be able to give me max 60 FPS at high settings in the games I mentioned...?

Any thoughts?

Get the 1050 Ti. For esports games you don't need more at 1080p 60hz. Yes, it's always nice to have more, but you don't need it. You won't see any noticeable difference in Overwatch with a 1060 from what you'd get with a 1050 Ti. Most of those games don't even require that much vram at high settings.

You don't need a Ryzen 2600 for those games either. Those are games where 4 cores/4 threads are more than enough.

I don't blame you for picking the 2600 though, more CPU power can come in handy in lots of ways. The 1060 is a more balanced choice for a 2600, it's closer in capability to what the 2600 can handle, but if you don't need that extra performance why pay for it?

I spent $140 on the 1050ti, which is backordered so easy to cancel. ~$200-225ish?

Although I'd be curious even despite that if there is an obvious reason to spend a lot more.

Thanks. The lower VRAM is a bit concerning as I already have the minimum RAM (8gb) in the build. If I’m going to spend an extra $70 on a 1060 3gb, is it worth the extra $25 to get a 580 with 8gb vram?

Would also love any input into my broader question: is this overkill when my monitor is going to cap the FPS at the 60Hz refresh rate anyway...?

No that isn't overkill, also I don't know what you're referring to by saying you have the minimum 8GB of RAM in the build.

The VRAM has nothing to do with system RAM. VRAM is GPU specific. and while yes, the 1060 has less VRAM than the 1050ti, the 1060 is still the better card.

I wouldn't. You're not getting a 580 brand new, which means you're buying a pretty old GPU that's used and in who knows what condition.

The card I linked is brand new. That's just my opinion. It's your money broham, invest it where you see fit.

That card was too big for my case, next cheapest RX 580s were $240. Not convinced either were great, with one having a lot of noise complaints and the other a lot of heating complaints. Ended up going to eBay and getting a slightly better quality, new 1060 6gb. In an mITX build I want to be sure things are as cool and quiet as possible.

Only slightly nervous about buying it off eBay but they have a pretty strong buyer protection program. Only 20% buyer's remorse, now having increased the cost of my entire build by $100 on the fly. Ugh, don't tell wife.

I doubt anyone is buying a 2060 till January at the earliest. 2080 will be available around October and mid level cards are typically a couple months behind. 2080ti is $1000, 2080 undisclosed but likely 700 minimum. 2060 is probably gonna cost twice what hes paying for that 1060

Who knows? Rumors are saying August release for 2080.

1060 6gb released 10 days after the 1080, so why do you think the 2060 will be not till January?

If they do keep the 1060 around longer as a mid range card then prices will surely drop even more, still making it a bad purchase right now.
