Im thinking new gpu or an ssd- any suggestions/prices?

Yes a better GPU is what you need an SSD will speed up load times but not increase gaming performance.

This 7870 is a great performance boost over that entry level GT 640

Ive been looking at that card do you know if i could use it in sli/crossfire- would it increase performance significantly?

You could go with crossfire, but you'd be better off going with a superior single GPU option like the r9 290 (once the aftermarket ones come out) since multi GPU systems tend to be a bit fiddly with drivers and game compatiblity etc.

You have an immensely powerful PSU so Crossfire or SLI (Nvidia) shouldn't be a problem
