Someone wants to sell me a windows 8.1 key. Is there a way to check prior to the installation if this key is genuine or not?

It doesn't require a product key to continue with 8.1 but it does with windows 7 for some reason.

Yes, they've apparently changed that recently. It used to ask for the Win 8/8.1 license.
