Is there a way to check if my motherboard is micro atx or mini itx without opening up my case

Easy, look at the picture, look at the PCI slots. If there's only one, it's Mini ITX.

I don't know what motherboard the Alienware uses, but I'm sure that it's Mini ITX because X51 is made at a console size.

Yes, you can. ITX mboards use a subset of the mounting holes that mATX uses ( which in turn is a subset of the regular ATX mboards ). Any case that can fit an ATX or mATX mboard can also hold an ITX mboard.
