So I've been gaming for a while on a random HP keyboard and mouse that came with my old prebuilt, and it's not really the most pleasant experience, so I think it's time for an upgrade. However, I'm not sure if I should get a Cherry MX Brown or MX Red. I'm obviously going to be gaming, which is the main purpose, but I'm also doing some programming for school. (I'm an electrical engineer). Also, what keyboard should I purchase? I want to keep it under 140. I was thinking of the corsair vengeance k70.

Solution
Red if you are gaming 90% of the time or so. Brown if you want a good typing experience too.

Red are fully linear with no feedback until you bottom the switch. Brown have a tactile bump when pressed and you know when you press them.

I have a Max Nighthawk X9 myself, with MX Reds - it's a great keyboard and I'd highly recommend it. I personally love the reds, and would not go with a tactile key if you'll be using this for gaming... I'm sure you can imagine how annoying it might get to some people having your WASD keys 'click' every time you need to move forward, or to the left or right. I'm actually a computer engineering student, and typing on the MX Reds feels great, though I basically just pound on the poor thing until it bottoms out.

I like to compare the different mechanical keys to the SSD-vs-HDD debate... sure, they might be a bit different from keyboard to keyboard, but the improvement over a membrane keyboard of any kind is so massive that you'd probably be happy with any of them. I think the MX Red is a good all-around keyswitch, though, and would work quite well for your purposes.

Just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth! :)

EDIT:
Here's a bit of fanboyism towards my favorite peripheral:

...and something I tell ANYONE looking for a new keyboard or mouse: avoid gloss finishes. All of them. There's nothing worse than using your keyboard for a week and having it look absolutely filthy afterwards; a nice soft-touch or matte plastic (like on the X9) works wonders in this regard. Gloss plastic is an absolute fingerprint and dirt magnet, and while I'm sure a lot of Razer owners are irritated by my saying this, I avoid it like the plague.

True, but when buying a keyboard for $140, I want the best. The K70 has a lot of LED problems (I know, I owned one), which is mainly them crapping out after a month or two. It's a great keyboard, but I would rather buy a Nighthawk (bought a Rosewill Apollo, which is the same keyboard but with a different finish and wristrest) for about the same price.

They are using poor quality LED's. A quick Google search or search of the Corsair forums and you see hundreds of issues with the LED's burning out.

Their new revision was suppose to fix the LED issue, but it doesn't look like it did.

LED is a BIG problem. Second hand value is reduced by 30% if you have LEDs out .

Everytime you look at that faulty led you think ... my $140 keyboard isnt working as it should.

Only an idiot would think it doesnt matter in general if a top end product has regular reported problems before it is remotely out of warranty..
