From less than Atom performance to beating top end processors today, that is quite a jump. And even if the performance is real, I wonder if anyone would use it outside of China...

If acquiring a distressed firm at bargain-basement price qualifies as stealing.
No, industrial espionage qualifies as stealing.

And if this chip is indeed being produced by TSMC, it will likely run afoul of the US blacklist restrictions. It may very well be that SMIC has finally been able to fully swallow and digest enough stolen fab tech to spin up its own 7nm node.

Since the design is CoWoS, are they able to get around the US blacklist? As a society we let's this happen. We were blinded by cheap manufacturing costs and didn't worry about the tech being "stolen". In quotes because we kind of gave it to them.

Do you really want the chips produced by a government that prides itself on the surveillance and suppression of it's people running in the server that your cell phone data gets piped through? This thing is going to have more backdoors than a colander.

Well it's called "Big Island", so I'm assuming they abused IP from AMD's short-sighted THATIC joint venture to cobble-together a 7nm port of Hawaii.

I suspect they based the design on IP from Imagination Technologies. The Chinese government owns the company, after all. The timing seems about right. The takeover occurred in 2017 while development of this "domestic" GPU commenced in 2018. "Big Island" might be a reference to the UK.

My guess is they're more for domestic customers rather than abroad.
Certainly. But they'll surely offer them for sale abroad as well. And if you're a foreign government planning to use them in a critical security role, they'll give them to you for next to nothing. ;)

At least China does not lie about spying on people
No, they lie about that too.

And Chona oppressestheir own people
The Tibetans, the Taiwanese, the Vietnamese, and a few others would beg to differ with you.

Afoul US restrictions? Hey hypocrite, US has been stealing, robbing and pillaging other countries since the 17th century. More recently, go read about Japan car companies in US in the 80s and the French energy company called Alstom in 2013. Semiconductors manufacturing is a hi-tech industry; it can not be stolen or even copy easily. Stop portraying yourself as innocent and clean as virgin Mary.

Meaning we're only 15 centuries behind China's record?

Seriously, here's a nickel -- go buy yourself a clue. No nation is perfect, but there are very few who make wholesale global IP theft official state policy. It may have been commonplace in the 17th century, but today it's a very small club, and a club in which China is the founding and principal member.

Interestingly enough, the first Google hit on that was about China's theft of Alstom's and Siemen's heavy-rail IP. Or did you mean the 2013 arrest of an Alstom executive for bribing officials around the world to win contracts?

Ya a very typical western hypocrite! Go read the book call The American Trap. IP theft, you think US is clean? All US is good at is covering their crimes by blaming others first. With the help of their medias like Google, they are good at slandering other countries. A small small club? US is the pioneer in theft and robbery, and no wonder you are the offspring of the pirates; actually you are better than your ancestors. At least people can tell your ancestors were stealing, but you and your kids are wolves in sheep cloth

Like there is a country out there that haven't stole and done shady stuff. Doesn't exist sorry. They are all the same. Just at a different level.

When you have the power it goes to your head and even the most straight forward person will get lost in that world of corruption. When you join them you have to become like them. There is no choices.

"Ready for prime time"

Oh really? There was no mention what so ever of any software that supports this. Without any support it isn't ready for anything, let alone prime time.

Hmm... Can you remember me what the USA Freedom Act is about? ... Ah yes, forcing mandatory retention of metadata by IT companies with access by the US gov.
You know that the EU is actually trying to build its own cloud service to protect the European company and citizens from the american gov sneaky eyes right?

You CANNOT compare China or Russian government or (my country) Iran's regime to US government. I'm not saying they are angels BUT THERE IS NO COMPARISON; stop talking like a child.
