China Set to Launch Its Own Space Station.... Mission: Unknown

China is just days away from launching an ambitious rival to the International Space Station, pictured above. A rocket launch carrying an unmanned test module named Tiangong 1 — literally, “Heavenly Palace 1” — is scheduled for this week. Allegedly, the 8.5-ton Tiangong 1 module is designed to practice autonomous rendezvous ops in orbit, in order to prep for a manned space base around 2020. But China-watchers and space specialists are trying to figure out if there’s an additional agenda for the Heavenly Palace.

Will it be a spacelab equipped strictly for scientific research? Is there a military mission? Is it a jobs program for China’s “large, young, highly motivated and growing population of space scientists and engineers?” (That’s how Gregory Kulacki, from the Union of Concerned Scientists, describes China’s space workforce.) Is the whole space-station program really just a PR ploy? Or some or all of the above?

The short answer is, we don’t know. The “opacity” of this and Beijing’s other space initiatives “should raise questions about Chinese intentions,” Dean Cheng, an analyst with the hawkish Heritage Foundation, tells Danger Room. One thing is for sure: Beijing has been awfully busy in space, with more and more satellite launches plus occasional spacewalks and even plans for a putting a man on the moon by 2030.

Jeffrey Wasserstrom, a University of California professor and author of China in the 21st Century, has a theory about Beijing’s obsession with spectacle, whether a massive engineering project, the Olympics or the theatrical unveiling of a new stealth-fighter prototype. Spectacles “play a role in confirming a vision, based partly in official myth but also in tangible reality, that China is a once-powerful country that was laid low for a time and has now risen again to a more natural status,” Wasserstrom wrote.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean Beijing intends to start a new space race against the U.S., which recently announced plans for new, gigantic rockets and a possible manned mission to an asteroid or even Mars. “China’s progress is steady but slow,” Cheng says. “Manned launches every other year hardly suggests a space-race mentality. At the same time, however, these are steady improvements, from a single man to two-man to three-man. The Tiangong spacelab … will mark another step forwards for China’s manned space program.”

Or a bit of everything!

China slowly works through... 50-100-500+ years of planning while we here in the USA get our shorts in a wad every 2 to 4 years.

If they really are ballsy, they will park the thing over Washington DC where everyone can see it at night.

All because USA don't want China to join the ISS program.

While China has a civil space administartion, USA thinks that because it is a single party dictatorship, the space administration is only a friendly mask to hide the fact that it is a branch of the sinister PLA military bound to take over the world. The Chinese governmnet of course totally denie it.

I don't know who to trust.

Corruption happens.

Dictatorship happens.

I bet the Germans didn't think Hilter was the man he was going to become.

Elected democratically, mind you.

Corruption happens both in China and USA... Enron *cough* *cough*

The US always had an agenda. It was just *our* agenda.

Which means it is somehow right.

Now I think further. I convinced myself that it is a big mistake for USA not allow China to join ISS and a big mistake for China to take the bait to build their own station.

Think about it, what can the Chinese taikonault in the ISS with everyone watching? Any bad things like enspionage and sabotage attempts will give China bad publicity and China already have enough of those and try to avoid more.

Now China is going to build their own, so they can do anything on it. Nice one USA!

Or is it USA trying to force China to build their own space station so that USA can say the operation looks suspecious and further propergates their idea of China is a potential threat to global security?

The chinese are just spewing they are likely to get to the moon and there won't be anything left of the Transformer ship that crashed there in the late 60's.

They want some energon cubes or various other nanotechnology including self repairing machines.

They currently have a fleet of cheap copies of Russian jets but the homemade engines won't run past 30hrs of flight time ... only the Ruskies and US can make decent turbopumps and complete engines worthy of military use.

Heaven help us if they get a splinter of the allspark or some such.

:)

See here. China has one resource that I find truly frightening. Millions of ants. (Citizens.) They can literally snap a finger and mobilize a million or more active duty within hours to help with a flood at home. The Civilians obey orders and work together to move out of the way during the Three Gorges Dam Construction. It is one of the wonders of the world.

In Korea I have heard first hand and also read stories about how thousands of chinese troops moved into country under cover of forest fires and then would attack using waves. If the front row died, they were tossed onto the barbed wire and used as bridges by the next row. And so on. There was a real risk of running out of ammunition prior to running out of enemies.

China is a power not to be messed with. I respect them. But I don't trust them any more than I do the Russian Bear. If we ever get into a shooting war, we are going to have to hit the Food, the Juice (Electric) and take out what we can very very very hard and fast. God help our Pacifist hand-wringing peace activists if China sinks a Carrier with 6000 aboard.

This is the exact type of unfounded hostility and fear the world we live in don't need. While political confrontation is certain, I don't see why either country want a physical war. Just because mainland China is communist doesn't mean they will attack USA. The two countries are too parasitically entwined together with each other.

Look up communism and compare it against the current russian economic system then post back your results.

Look up Stalinism while your at it.

I'm sending you a tutor's bill for my work If I have to explain more.

The Ruskies are a loose emerging capitalist society ... about 20 years in now.

I think you missed some recent history ... wait ... you were in nappies ... my apologies.

LOLWUT? The only thing Russians embraced is mass stupidity culture and dictature....

... wait, that IS democracy :) Gotcha.

The one thing Russia has going for them as I type, they are tough and going after the resources the land has to offer as well as under the ice.

Someday Europe is going to be defacto annexed via commerce and utility bills just to enjoy the lights of Paris.

And those Ukranian Ladies, whew...

No, the proper proverb is:

一山還有一山高

or

天外有天, 人外有人

Meaning:

The is always a taller mountain

There is heaven beyond heaven and a better person to anyone.

I think you mix the two up and invented something that is just decipherable. Luckily I know enough to understand it.

Russians are not tough, they're degraded, lazy and keep hating on Americans since the media brainwashes them into doing so. And their resources are being sold abroad. Did you know their gas prices are up like anything lately, and the politicians keep blabbing about "shortage" while stuffing their pockets with the money obtained from selling oil to Europe?

I do agree. Look at the life expectancy of a male Russian and compare them with the so call western democratic country (I hate how big company have so much interference on our politic. It makes that guy in interview and said that Goldman Sachs rules the world partly legit.)

Proverb 人外有人,天外有天 ( traditional and simplified , Pinyin rén wài yǒu rén, tiān wài yǒu tiān ) People outside there is day (traditional and Simplified, Pinyin rén wài yǒu rén, tiān wài yǒu tiān )

No matter how good you think you are, there is always someone out there that is better.
