Aren’t Huawei Ascend chips just clandestinely TSMC manufactured chips procured from Huawei’s shell companies to bypass sanctions? It seems to me that if SMIC could produce Ascend chips with processes rivaling TSMC, then they wouldn’t bother with all this obfuscation.

Any solution that doesn’t require CUDA hugely reduces costs. Most companies just simply don’t have people capable of using GPGPU compute outside the CUDA system.

just for a share...DeepSeek just released their new opensource V3 model on Huggingface, which can run on a single Mac Studio with 20 tokens/s output speed, while the quality matches top tier non-reasoning models from OpenAI & Anthoropic.

I'd like to clarify that.. the full 671B v3 model does perform well on benchmarks. The distilled model that runs on a Mac at a decent speed is a different model that doesn't benchmark as well.

Believe it or not. The Chinese and Americans use AI for very different purposes. Many Chinese companies from many different industries are adopting AI for building products and services including ANT group. The US spent billions building some kind skynet (AGI) which never came to fruition.
