News Chinese university applies for undersea cable cutter patent — device developed by coastal university located across the sea from Taiwan

Why would anyone respect Chinese patents?

And in this case, I suspect that is the reason the Chinese government rejected the patent. Because they wanted to use it outright without pesky hindrance.

So now the sea cables will need some sort of conduit or other kind of armor / protection. This includes power cables ($$$$$).

They said it's for "emergency reasons" then why don't they cut the cable on land before it goes into the sea/ocean? This is just an excuse for communication sabotage.

What they should do is just bury the equivalent of an anchor chain far enough on either side of a route where cables are buried that if any ship attempts an anchor-drag, it's likely to get its anchor snapped off before it hits the target.

One question I've had is how long ship anchor chains are. Because, you only have to worry about that in water shallow enough for them to reach. Not in the deep sea (although that probably runs into other problems, like ocean currents).

Lastly, all of the concern over anchor drags become somewhat moot, if a bad actor decides to send an underwater drone to do the job. Even if you try to armor your cable, I'm sure there's an amount explosives it could use to defeat any practical amount of armor. It's thought that explosives were used to sabotage that Nordstream 2 pipeline, so not a theoretical problem.

I think that's pretty transparent.

One interpretation might be that they didn't want their government to do things like this. However, they cannot speak out against it. So, they do the next best thing, which is to publicly do something in support of it which essentially "outs" their government's position on the matter, while minimizing risk to themselves. Or maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

Well, Xi will have no room to complain when every Chinese ship gets followed and watched from the moment it leaves Chinese waters going forward.

Interesting take

See https://kis-orca.org/subsea-cables/maintenance-repair-operations/
One of the standard operating procedures is to drag a grapnel across the seabed to snag and cut the cable when carrying out repairs. Don't be surprised if the grapnel used for these purposes is patented.

These cables can often be trenched / buried into the seabed to offer protection from anchors, trawl nets but usually costs a little extra so might be left with higher vulnerability to damage if penny pinching and not done.

Emergency reasons to cut cables? That's called war, or sabotage. There is no reason to ever need to cut your own cables this way because well...they are yours, you can unplug them (not really but you have access to the end). What a ridiculous thing to make and patent.

Well considering that the Chinese has no freedom of press I'm not sure if that is the case. Even though they are not "outing" them directly but I'm sure they are not dumb and know what they would be attempting to say. Though I'm not completely sure but one would think them being Communist China that any news that reaches an international scale would be tailored to there liking.

They just recently stated that they "simulated" the destruction of Starlink in a very timely manner by only using i think 90 satellites. And now they release that they have a patent on a device that cuts submarine cables for "emergency reasons". In my opinion, they are telling the world that they are a super power and not to be taking lightly, and that they can destroy what basically wins wars...... Communication!!!
But that's just my take on it, I maybe completely off basis.

The western countries need to unite... and start a new moon project to paint a Winnie Pooh image on the moon. Would be funny to see Xi prohibit looking at the moon.

Designed in china, built in N korea, sold to russia for the shaddow fleet to continue chopping up communication and power cables in the baltic sea. Interesting how the economic flows shift with time ( I am old enough to remember: VCR player, designed in us, built in japan). The finns have impounded a suspicious ship and constrained the crew, finally. there need to be repercussions for this. Looking at the firewall data of my own WP sites, I have to wonder why Ru is still allowed to be attached to the internet at all. If it was my kid, that toy would be gone. On the bright side, using an underwater crispr robot is WAY more efficient than dragging anchors for 100s of km and so therefore is much more environmentally friendly !

unfortunately, starlink cannot provide POE
LOL, the idea of orbital power plants that use microwaves to transmit energy down to the surface of the Earth has been shown to be rather credible.

The problem is that you need to spread out the beam (i.e. lower the energy-density) and use a very large collector, in order to make it safe. So, that makes it not a suitable replacement for PoE.
