Chipset Fan Necessary?

The fan on the chipset (I believe its on the south bridge), on my A8N-SLI Deluxe board makes racket every now and then. A noise like its rubbing something, but best I can tell it isn't. I couple of light taps to the case and the noise will go away. I know many chipsets don't even have fans, is this one necessary?

I'm thinking its not, but its been a while since I've been into this stuff, and things change very quickly.

well, im not much of an expert, but ive read that this chipset (i have the same mobo) gives more Watt then most other chipsets, meaning its also a bit hotter... my guess would be that active cooling is prefered on this chipset...

apart from that, it is strang, ive heard this complain more, i have it myself, and a friend of mine has it. he has the A8N-SLI.

Some chipsets do require active cooling.. so if your bothered about the noise of your current fan, you could try oiling it if u wanna b a cheapskate but, it might be best to just buy a nice new fan. (as for oiling fans i think its possible, i found a few tutorials on it soz, i dont hav any links tho. something to try if ur feeling adventerous lol)
