chkdsk and WD My Passport Ultra not recognized

have my friends WD My Passport ultra 2TB hard drive and it was not being recognized on my PC I ran a chkdsk and the problem seemed to be fixed but when I disconnect it and reconnect I end up at square one.
Is there any fix to this?

Check the HDD in windows here is how below link. Saves me typing you msy need to format it before your system recognizes the drive.

So I need to format the drive. The chkdsk says the drive is NFTS, is there anyway to fix this without formatting?
