My computer has been forcing chkdsk every boot and it took hours so I began skipping it. I did this until suddenly my hard drive was locked and I couldn’t open it. So I finally decide to let chkdsk run again. It’s been going at the speed of about 1 percent every 4 hours. Also, it was on 29 percent last night. When I woke up it was on 19. Is this normal? Why is it going so slow? Why is the percentage going down? What’s wrong with my hard drive for this to happen? Should I just give up and send it somewhere for repairs?

If you have (had) data worthy of retrieval, I'd extricate it ASAP...

One should not play with chkdsk unless aware of and prepared to accept that chkdsk itself could easily further accelerate the demise of a failing drive...

It would likely not be a stretch to guess crsytaldiskinfo might show some pending failures/reallocated sectors, etc...(general wisdom is more than 1, the drive is on the way to the big recycling shredder in the sky)
