Hello all, I have a 2TB external hard disk and had a problem of not being able to copy from. Several threads I read advised to run CHKDSK H: /R (H is the hard disk). And now it's stuck at stage 4 for the last 24 hrs... How do I stop it without causing damage to my external drive?

If you are patient enough, chkdsk could eventually finish the scan and possibly repair some errors on your drives file system. Sometimes it takes days to scan a faulty hard drive media depending on how bad it is.

Hey, Kojo06!

Chkdsk is taking forever because your drive is 2 TB. The bigger the capacity, the longer it takes. With your external's capacity, it can take days even as trekzone said. If there are too many sectors that need to be fixed on the HDD as well, it can take even more.
I'd suggest you NOT to disturb the process, this might further the damage on the drive. 🙁

Good luck!

'' there are too many sectors that need to be fixed on the HDD as well, it can take even more''

if this is the case think about replacing the drive

A bad sector is a sector on a computer's disk drive or flash memory that cannot be used due to permanent damage (or an OS inability to successfully access it), such as physical damage to the disk surface (or sometimes sectors being stuck in a magnetic or digital state that cannot be reversed or failed flash memory transistors.

in the presses the data of this so called repair can be lost , corrupted so if its something that's core windows or something the system needs to work or boot well your done there also if its getting damage before whats to say its not going to keep on getting the damage ??

bottom line is a bad drive is a bad drive
